Why Tosta

This concept started while I was looking for a new toaster for my own kitchen and could not quite find the object I had in mind. I wanted something more minimal, more architectural and less rounded than many of the options available today.

Inspired by the confident, box-like toaster designs of the 1960s and 70s, Tosta reinterprets that timeless visual language with a cleaner and more contemporary expression.

A lighter, more architectural form

Many modern toasters feel oversized, rounded and visually heavy. Tosta takes a different approach.

The raised base gives the object a lighter stance, making the main body appear to hover slightly above the countertop. Its crisp rectangular form creates a calm and deliberate presence, while the restrained detailing keeps the design simple without feeling anonymous.

The intention is to create an object that feels robust, well made and familiar, while still belonging in a contemporary kitchen.

Simplicity as a premium quality

Tosta is designed around the idea that a premium product does not need unnecessary features or visual complexity.

Its character comes from proportion, material, construction and the way each interaction feels. By keeping the form and mechanics simple, the concept aims to support durability, repairability and a long useful life.

The goal is not to make an object that demands attention, but one that earns its place through everyday use.

Two clear controls

The interaction is deliberately reduced to two controls.

One control releases and lifts the bread. The second provides three browning settings, supported by a small LED indicator. Three levels are intended to make the choice clear and predictable without introducing an excessive number of nearly identical settings.

Earlier versions of the concept included a third button, which can still be seen in some of the development images. After reviewing how people use their toasters, the control layout was simplified further.

Made for the countertop

A toaster is an everyday object that often remains visible on the kitchen counter. It should therefore feel considered, compact and easy to live with.

The proposed finishes are intended to age well and remain visually relevant over time. Neutral tones allow the toaster to blend naturally into different interiors, while options such as Dusty Mint introduce a more contemporary character without overwhelming the object.

Additional colourways and material combinations may be explored as the concept develops.

Robust mechanics and considered performance

The mechanical experience is an important part of the design. The lever should move smoothly and feel controlled, while the internal components should be selected with durability and consistent performance in mind.

The three browning levels are based on the idea that fewer, well-calibrated choices can be more useful than a large number of vague settings. Different breads, grain types and frozen slices would need to be tested during development to refine timing, heat distribution and browning consistency.

The ambition is to make the toaster intuitive from the first use: simple to understand, satisfying to operate and dependable over time.

Safety and development

Safety would be a fundamental part of the product-development process. Any production version would need to undergo the relevant electrical, thermal and mechanical testing, as well as meet the required certifications for the markets in which it is sold.

Tosta is currently a design concept. Its construction, performance, materials and technical specifications would continue to be refined through prototyping, testing and engineering development.
